The Gral. Cesareo L. Berisso International Airport, better known as “Carrasco” because of the name located 15 miles from downtown Montevideo which is located suburb, this airport development has achieved a high degree of international recognition refined and elegant new terminal, which opened in 2009.
Designed by architect Rafael Viñoly, based in New York Uruguayan, all terminal functions are under incredible gigantic curved ceiling of 365 meters.
The interior is bathed in natural light, and the passengers and visitors can watch the rolling landscape from the windows of the restaurant and from an outdoor terrace located under the eaves of the high ceiling. And, of course, watch the planes take off and land.
Carrasco Airport gained international architecture award.
The Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly was awarded both the popular vote and the jury, by the construction of Carrasco Airport officially opened in 2009 The jury was composed of 200 designers and architecture professionals from around the world charge choosing the best buildings in 52 different categories ranging from varied constructions family homes, to schools, museums or offices. Over 100 countries presented their projects and buildings were 87 winners in Architizer A +, a social network that became a benchmark since its launch in 2009.
The design Viñoly was recognized worldwide for his “great ceiling triple curvature” 400 feet above the surface of the building stretches, crossing the ends to rest on the ground, as indicated by the official website of the airport. This innovative design led him to get the award in the transport category, in which he was nominated along Bodrum airport in Turkey and Terminal II of San Francisco in the United States.
Since opening in 2009, the new terminal of the International Airport of Carrasco has received several global awards for its innovative design and its open and comfortable facilities. In 2011 he was elected as one of the top four airports in the world.
